Batard Montrachet Grand Cru Cuvée Dame de Flandres 2016
156th Hospices De Beaune Wine Auction on the 20th November 2016
Vintage Report
The harvest was relatively late this year, so the wines have been tasted very soon after being racked out of their fermenting tanks into barrel. Nonetheless they are already showing their character. The wines capture the elegance of the vintage, coming after the more massive 2015s, and show a fine sense of their terroirs.
The few grapes that there were, after the frost, were nonetheless rigorously sorted to remove anything not fully up to standard. Just a barrel and a half could be made from 0.29ha. Fine bright pale lemon colour. The immediate impression on the bouquet is a wine of huge weight. This wine demonstrates a fine sense of majesty on the palate with yellow fruit, some pears and peaches, very good residual acidity and exceptional persistence. The concentration of fruit is so intense that there does not appear to be any take up of wood from the new barrel.
